Smart City

What is a Smart City ?

A Smart City embraces a framework of available information to solve city problems addressing backlogs and improve operational efficiency

Smart city technology can make cities more effective and efficient, which is necessary given the projected rapid growth in urban populations over the next few decades.

A Smart City is a city that uses available technology to provide services and solve city problems.

By gathering data by way of connected technology that can be analysed in order to better inform decisions. When a smart city uses information and communication technology (ICT) this will improve operational efficiency.

The impact of this activity can include:

  • Improving the efficiency of city service delivery
  • Increased workforce engagement
  • Improved infrastructure
  • Enhancing quality of life for all
  • Efficient public utilities
  • Safer communities
  • Increasing equity and prosperity for residents and businesses

Smart Cities are able to share information with the public and can provide a better quality of government service and citizen welfare.

A Smart City focus is to improve transportation and accessibility, social services, promote sustainability, and give its citizens a voice.

The success of a smart city relies on the relationship between the public and private sectors as much of the work to create and maintain a data-driven environment falls outside the local government remit. For example, smart surveillance cameras may need input and technology from several companies.

To achieve the objective of being a smart city a framework of information and communication technologies needs to be created and deployed to address urban challenges and create sustainable infrastructure.
